Description
The purpose of the present research was to elucidate the types of nursing care provided to patients with dementia in inpatient psychiatric emergency wards. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 nurses working with patients with dementia in inpatient psychiatric emergency wards at four public hospitals, followed by inductive qualitative analysis. Results showed that nurses in inpatient psychiatric emergency wards practiced nursing care involving the “construction of environments that give a sense of everyday life to the patient,” “protection of both patients with dementia and those with mental illnesses,” and “sorting out the families’ concerns to prepare their lives after discharge.” These findings suggest that nursing practice at inpatient emergency psychiatric wards must take the distance of patients with dementia and patients with mental illnesses, have patients with mental illnesses whom the symptom improved interchange with patients with dementia, and performs pressure for the cancellation of the isolation of patients with dementia to a doctor. The nurse keeps that you may have the fatigue that families has in care in a heart and must take care of families.
