 We report the evaluation of aromatherapy using special fragrance made from rose for the patients in palliative care unit of Shimane University Hospital. The rose fragrance is made from special rose cultivated in Shimane prefecture, which is distilled water fragrance easy use for an aroma instrument. We evaluated the effect of the aromatherapy using rose fragrance to reduce physical and psychological pain of the patients. Ten adult patients (five male and five female) were interviewed by short version of POMS (Profile of Mood States) and NRS (Numerical Rating Scale) score of the symptom of pain and fatigue before and after the aromatherapy. We checked the score of six-grade system of the subjective preference about the scent of this fragrance in all patients. Tension-Anxiety score in POMS was significantly reduced by the aromatherapy. There were no significant differences of the NRS score of pain and fatigue before and after the treatment. We suggested that the effect of the aromatherapy using rose fragrance was obtained to reduce tension-anxiety of the patients in palliative care unit.
