The purpose of this study, nurses working in a general ward is performed for the purpose of revealing the viewpoint for judging the risk of the fall of elderly patients with dementia. Semi-structured interview was conducted with of nine nurses working in a general ward as subjects, to collect data which were then qualitatively and descriptively analyzed. When elderly patients with dementia was hospitalized, nurses working in a general ward judged the risk by being conscious that “there was risk in each period according to the elapsed recuperating” , thinking that “evaluating the effects of disease and treatment”, “predicting the possibility of the patient moving by oneself” and “inferred behaviors involving a high risk”. The nurses tried to assess the abilities of the patients by “predicting the risk based on the patient’s behaviors” and “predicting the risk based on the patient’s response to cope with the situation”. However, there was a limit to the discretion of the nurse of one person, nurses increased the accuracy of their judgment by “considering the situation as a team”.
