The aim of this research was to clarify fulfilling aspects and difficulties of the job of bone marrow program coordinator. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey requested by JMDP (Japan Marrow Donor Program) was sent to all 167 of its coordinators throughout Japan. Of those, 131 (78.4%) responded. Respondents were asked to choose from one of four multiplechoice responses to rate each of twenty-five items describing fulfilling aspects of their job and thirtyfour items that made their work difficult. The top response for the former was completing follow-up after bone marrow had been donated and the coordinator was able to confirm that the donor was in good physical health. The number-one difficulty was dealing with a donor who had continuing physical discomfort following a donation. Maximum likelihood factor analysis with promax rotation revealed four fulfillment factors, including “coordination between the donor and other concerned parties that goes smoothly,” while there were five difficulty factors, such as“the stress of feeling pressured by conflicting interests on both sides. ”Analysis of the relationship between each factor and attributes using the Mann-Whitney U test showed that fulfilling aspects of the job were experienced regardless of how long the coordinator had been on the job. On the other hand, even veteran coordinators dealt with many difficulties, suggesting that they require support.
