Description
The purpose of this study is to clarify the efficacy of preparation which children undergoing surgery are performed collaboratively by nurses of outpatient departments, wards, and operation rooms before children are hospitalized. For 28 preschool children who were hospitalized for operation in the children's ward and their parents, we performed a questionnaire survey for their parents'impression of preparation and a participant-observer study for children's response to preparation. Many families were satisfied with explanation of treatment which operation-room nurses performed by doll and subsequently with children's getting to the operation room without getting fussy. In the participation observation by the nurse, most children had received it consenting treatment. Familial members uttered positive opinion as follows; "children could understand the preparation","children did their best", "parents' anxiety was decreased", "parents could offer appropriate support for children". These results suggest that the prehospital preparation in cooperation with each nurse who has different specialities is effective for both children and their parents.
