The European Parliament has consistently sought to expand its powers to give it a greater role in the affairs of the European Union. The role of the Parliament in the resignation of the Santer European Commission in March 1999 and the subsequent appointment of the Prodi European Commission is further evidence of the growing importance of the Parliament in EU affairs.
