The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between athletes' perception of coaches' social power and athletes' attributional styles in physical education and sport settings. The subjects were 117 athletes in highschool sport clubs. They were administered two questionnaires; one was to measure the perceptions of their coach's social power, consists of seven subscales named as expert power, punishment power, benefit power, enthusiasm power, legitimate power, affiliation and acceptance power, and reference power, respectively. The other was to measure the attributional styles they made in physical education and sport settings. The main results as follows : The punishment power was possitively correlated with attribution of positive and negative events to ability. The benefit power, enthusiasm power,and reference power were possitively correlated with attribution of positive events to effort and negatively correlated with attribution of positive events to ability. These results and its implications to motivation in sport coaching were discussed.
