Description | This study examined Pattern languages as media that mediate the creation of knowledge in language learning. To foster the creation of practical knowledge in language learning, one must reflect on one's own practices. Pattern languages are dialogue media that highlight similarities and differences in experience and value among learners, and they are believed to mediate dialogues that would generate reflections. Based on this perception, I conducted dialogue workshops using pattern languages and analyzed the contents of the dialogues that emerged during the workshops. The result revealed that reflections were less likely to occur during the workshops centered around empathies unless the dialogues became cumulative, whereas reflections were more likely to occur during the workshops centered around refutations. Furthermore, it supported the hypothesis that the nature of the patterns raised during the workshops affects the nature of the workshops.
