Description
The authors have been conducting activities called “KANKYO TERAKOYA” to foster prospective teachers who are oriented to natural science. As one of these activities, a dyeing experiment was conducted, in which natural dyestuffs that were used in Junihitoe in the Heian Period was involved. This theme was adopted in order to appeal to students learning liberal arts. As a preliminary experiment, selection of used dyestuffs and fabrics, allocation of time for experiment, etc., and pattern designing were examined. Based on these results, guidance for dyeing experiment was given to students specializing in education. Afterwards, it was carefully checked that the students had mastered knowledge and technique on dyeing. The educational practice“ SCIENCE ACADEMY” targeting pupils at the affiliated primary school and junior high school, and open-class lecture targeting local primary school pupils were organized to give chances for the university students to teach by themselves. As a result, the university students performed sufficient communication in a positive manner with children, since they had mastered the technique through the dyeing experiment in advance. In addition, smooth proceeding was seen even in the limited time of the open-class lecture. They showed aggressive attitude such as seeking what kind of lessen should be developed in the future.
