Description
This paper analyses the factors of the population change in coastal area of Iwami Region in the Tokugawa era. The shumon-aratame-cho of the village in the domain of Hamada was used as historical documents for the study. As the analysis of documents, it became clear that high population growth brought by natural increase, low net migration rates and lower mortality. More than 60 percent households increased by branch, and the non-landowning class had a high ratio of permanent residents. The economic base in the seashore village had become a factor of a strong orientation to the inheritance of the family.
