Description
(1) In the present study, auther examined
the so called San Marzano variety of different origin. One was grown on Simane prefecture since 1952, another at the National Institute of Agricultural Science (Section of Horticulture) and the third in America. Results of the study showed that they had some different characters, and auther decided their strain number as follows; SM 1 (from the National Institute of Agricultural Science), SM 2 (from Shimane prefecture) and SM 3 (from America).
(2) Main characters of three strains were as follows.
1. Color of fruit
SM 1 Red, SM 2 Redish orange,
SM 3 Deep red
2. Shape of leaf
Different with one another.
3. Sape of fruit
SM 1 Elliptical, but top became depressed ,and on the surface there were two folds longitudinally.
SM 2 E1liptical and top was spherical.
SM 3 Oblong and top was peaked.
4. Growth habit
SM 1 Normal
SM 2 Normal
SM 3 Its vine was of short branching type and growth stopped at about 8th cluster.
5. Transverse section of fruit
SM 1 Hollow spaces were recognizeed between the jellylike placental matrix and the outer wall.
SM 2 Non hollow spaces.
SM 3 Simillar to SM 1.
