It is generally said that synagogue cantillation and the Gregorian chant have influenced on each other through their developmental stages until today, and above all that the former is one of the main sources of the latter. The common features observed in both music tell us of such histoncal circunlstances. Besides, most interestingly, these common features seem often to be the very ones that the ancient Jewish music had. Here the connection between the synagogue cantillation and the Gregorian chant is examined especially from the modal side.
This paper is one of my studies of Jewish music. |
