Leaving the Yellow Houseは1957年Esquireに発表され,1968年にMosby's Memoirs and Other Storiesの中に収録された短編である。主人公は72歳の老女Hattieである。自分の不注意による事故で怪我をし,余命いくばくもないと感じたHattieは唯一の財産であるthe yellow houseを誰に譲ったらよいかと思い巡らすが誰もが己の利益のみを追求し,自分のことは少しも考えてくれないことを初めて知り,愕然とする。そしてHattieは落胆のあまり自分にthe yellow houseを譲渡する遺書をしたためる。この短編はBellow独特の含蓄のある,衝撃的な文章で終わる。
