Description
This is a report on the actual conditions of rural electrification in the village, Takibe-mura in Toyoura District of Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The investigation was carried out during some four months from summer to autumn in 1950.
1) In this farm village, the immediate motives for electrification were the shortage of fram labour and the restricted consumption of petroleum used for farm oil-engines, under the influence of the World War II.
2) This village has a peculiaf electric equipment, the community radio to which the whole village listen through their individual speakers, in addition to farm electromotors or light traps.
3) Most electic facilities of this village are constructed in the co-operation of all villagers.
The investigation showed that co-operative electrification, as in this village, is far more economical, especially in upkeep expenses, than individual one.
4) As to the electrification limit in farm man agement, it was pointed out :
(a) That there is an economic unbalance between the proper scale of facilities to be required of electrification itself and the actual one of farming in which the village stands.
(b) That there arises a question how the surplus labour caused by rural electrification is to be used on the basis of the marginal theory in business economics.
