Description | Utilization of coal ash as a geomaterial solves a solid waste problem and provides needed construction material. Waste disposal problems are becoming acute in the urban environment, because it is here that most coal-fired generating plants are locate, and where the supply of natural construction aggregate is becoming scarce. This paper presents the mechanical properties of compacted coal ash. The samples were compacted using the JIS 1210 procedure. Sample strengths were detemined by uncon fined compression tests immediately following compaction. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples drops off sharply on the wet side of optimum water content, whereas on the dry side, the unconfined compressive strength is affected less by moulding water content and more by dry density (a reflection of the blow count or compactive effort used). The utilization of coal ash would help alleviate the disposal problems encountered at incineration plants, while reducing the demand for natural aggregates.
