上記の例は，Time（December 11,2000）に掲載されたCathay Pacific社の広告である。この最後に用いられている文のように，現代英語の新しい方向性の一つとして，関係代名詞節を独立的に使用する用法，特にwhichが文頭に生じる用法が小説や新聞・雑誌などにおいてますます見受けられるようになってきている。
本稿においては，こうした独立的に現れる関係詞節を自立関係詞節（Independent Relative Clause）と呼ぴ，まず，関係詞節全体の中でその位置づけをした後，国内外の辞書や文法書，語法書におけるこの用法の取り扱いを概観し，さらに，筆者が収集した実例分析を通じて，書き言葉及び話し言葉における意味機能を中心に探っていきたい。
