Descriptions
The purpose of this work is to demonstrate how insights gained from the field of sociolinguistics can be used in the analysis of the cotemporary novel. John Updike's novel The Witches of Eastwick (1984) will serve as a demonstration. I will give a brief overview of the concerns of sociolinguistics and concentrate the major part of this paper on an analysis of some excerpts from the novel.
