シロイルカが島根に来た経緯 : 連邦崩壊前夜の訪ソ団

抄録・要旨

　本稿は、江津市と浜田市に所在する「しまね海洋館アクアス」にシロイルカが導入された経緯を、関係者への聞き取り調査をもとに記録したものである。そのきっかけは、ソビエト連邦崩壊直前の1991年10月、ロシア連邦沿海地方政府の招待でウラジオストクとナホトカを訪れた鳥取県・島根県友好親善訪ソ団に遡る。このとき、当時の澄田信義島根県知事が散歩中に偶然シロイルカを目にしたことが、石見海浜公園整備計画の一環として、2001年に開館するアクアスの目玉にシロイルカを迎える契機となった。日露関係が紆余曲折を続ける中でも、ロシアとの地域交流の証しであるシロイルカたちは、島根県のアイドルとしてすでに四半世紀近くの時を過ごしている。

抄録・要旨

　This article documents the historical process of introducing beluga whales to the Aquas aquarium, located in Gōtsu and Hamada cities, Shimane Prefecture, based on interviews with key participants.
　The story begins in October 1991, just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, when the Tottori-Shimane Friendship Delegation visited Vladivostok and Nakhodka at the invitation of the Primorsky Krai Administration in the Russian Federation.
　During this visit, Nobuyoshi Sumida, the then Governor of Shimane Prefecture, happened to see belugas while taking a walk. This encounter became the catalyst for featuring the charming animal as the main attraction of Aquas, which opened in 2001 as part of the Iwami Seaside Park development plan.
　Despite the ups and downs in Japan-Russia relations, the belugas, an enduring symbol of regional exchange, have spent nearly quarter of a century as cherished icons of Shimane.
