Descriptions
The purpose of this study was to include an aromatic bath using rose water in the bathing process of elderly with dementia who are living at health care facilities, and to evaluate the stability of emotion of the elderly with dementia. Ten participants took baths without aroma (bathing A1), with aroma (bathing B) and without aroma (bathing A2). The evaluation method was observation of emotions in the bathing process of the elderly in the dressing room and bathroom (undressing - body and hair washing - sitting in the tub - dressing). The expressions were classified into“Happy”,“Neutral”and“Unhappy”and recorded every two minutes by a researcher. The number of“Happy”emotion minus that of“Unhappy”emotion was considered as “palliative score”. The scores were compared among bathing A 1,bathing B, and bathing A2 using a analysis of variance, and then using a multiple comparison. Significant differences were observed between A1 and B(p=0.003) and A2 and B(p=0.002), respectively. In conclusion, it was observed that aromatherapy using rose water had palliative effects on the emotions of the elderly with dementia in the bathing process.
