Descriptions
This study examined trends in studies on nurse-patient relationship. We surveyed 68 studies published between 1987 and 1994, and classified their major features. A rapid increase in the number of nursing colleges occurred during this period. The following study categories were extracted: 1) analysis of interaction, 2) response of nurse and patient, 3) factors that promote interaction, 4) factors that disturb the establishment of nurse-patient relationships, 5) ways to promote interaction and their effects on nursing. These categories were divided into fundamental research aimed at clarifying nurse-patient relationships and practical research aimed at advancing relationships. We concluded that studies on nurse-patient relationships should be continued in higher education for nurses and that the results of these studies should be used to optimize active nursing services.
