The Old Testament in Hebrew has ta‘amim, the ecphonetic signs. The subject treated in this paper is‘on the musical expression the signs carry'. How the Old Testament was recited or sing in the early synagogue is unknown. We suppose it chiefly from the way Jews do today through their oral tradition.
