Unusual wet snow fall occurred over districts of Shimane and Hiroshima Prefectures in January 2-3, 1978. Forests at elevation of 300m to 600m were severely damaged by snow crown.
This investigation was attempted to analyze the structure of damaged Sugi(Crypto meria japonica D.DON) stand for the purpose of obtaining valuable information about proper management method of forests more resistant to snow crown.
This paper deals with the analysis of two damaged stands in Shimane Uinversity Forest.
Among many discussions in this paper, the following are most important :
1. The middle class trees in the stand in terms of diameter and height are most susceptible to snow crown.
2. The diameter of stems at the point of breaking by the weight of snow crown indicates the intensity of snow crown.
