Pollen in sixteen samples from the Gendai site in Kundomi-cho, Hirata City, Shimane Prefecuture has been examined. From the pollen assemblages, the following seven divisions, in descending order, has been recognised ;
Division 7 (samples 2-5) : Quercus subgn. Cyclobalarlopsis, Carpinus, Quercus subgn.
Quercus, Pinus subgn. Diploxylon and Cryptomeria.
Division 6 (samples 6-8) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon and Quercus subgn.
Cyclobalanopsis.
Division 5 (sample 9) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon, Tsuga and Myrica.
Division 4 (sample 10) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon and Ulnus-Zelkoua.
Division 3 (samples 12-14) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon, Fagus and Carpinus.
Division 2 (sample 15) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon.
Division 1 (sample 16) : Pinus subgn. Diploxylon and Cryptomeria.
All samples are correlated with the Gramineae pollen zone of ONISHI (1985). Division 7 and division 6 are correlated with the Cryptomeria subzone and Cyclobalanopis-Quercus subzone, respectively. Divisions 5 to 1 are correlated with the Pinus (Dioloxylon) subzone. The sedimentation rate in the upper part is estimated to be 3.0mm/year, whereas that of lower part is estimated to be O.5mm/year.
