Verrtical profiles of chlorophyll-a in Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi were revealed using in situ vertical chlorophyll-a measurement apparatus. Measurements were taken place from Oct. 1997 to Oct. 1998. Vertical chlorophyll-a profiles were classified into four patterns bottom-peaked type, surface-peaked type, subsurface-peaked type, and flat type. The profile was characterized subsurface-peaked type in Lake Nakaumi and bottom-peaked type in Lake Shinji. Relationship between standing stock of chlorophyll-a in the euphotic layer and surface chlorophyll-a concentration was well expressed as linear regression(r=0.82) in Lake Nakaumi, but correlation was not good (γ=032) in Lake Shinji
