This research focuses on the First Year Experience, which currently attracts attention in an education program to solve the various educational problems that stem from the drastic changes in university. The purpose of this paper is primarily as follows:(1)to present the trend report on the FYE by setting the definition, types, various surveys, and statistics in order,(2)to examine the results of the pre-investigation for the students of some faculties at Shimane University, focusing on the educational effects on the students and the educational needs for them. The consequences of this research reveal that it is indispensable to embed the students’ viewpoints into discussions of an educational reform, including the FYE. Furthermore, it is implicated that the well organized Faculty Development in which reconstruction of implement system, daily practice of FD and collaboration with adjoining educational program should be achieved is necessary to raise the educational power of the diversifying university and students.
