Description | Height mensurations made from the ground are not so accurate as generally beileved. The error derives principally from a difficulty of seeing the exact top of a tree in dense forest stand.
A "intercept growth" index is based on height growth during 3, 5, 7, and 10 year periods that begins with the year in which the breast height level is attained. High correlation coefficients and significant values were found between 10 year intercept growth and total height(r_<10> = 0.730 to 0.953), on the other hand, 3-year intercept growth was not significantly correlated with total-height. A linear relation ship was found to exist between 10-year intercept growth and total-height. Mensuration of 10-year intercept growth was appreciably easier and accurater than mensuration of total-height. Total-height can be estimated indirectly with 10-year intercept growth in the Kuromatsu stand. |
