The drug Information center in the hospital pharmacy receives many inquiries from physicians as to the identification of tablets and capsules prescribed in other clinics or hospitals. We answer the inquiries with the use of published indices for drug identification. However, these indices are reprinted only infrequently and cannot, therefore, be updated continuously. We have developed a identification system based on computer with associated 25MB disk. The database contains about 7,300 drugs consist of the identification codes and other relevant informations. The identification code is used to search the database. The information of identified drug is printed out on a paper, which contains the following items: proprietary name; manufacture's name; active ingredient; drug effect, etc. In trial of six months, the computer system was found to be three times as fast as the index based system and could provide many drug informations with updated database. This system was proved to be practical at the hospital pharmacy.
