A Survey of the Special Classes for the Mentally Retarded (Primary School) in Shimane Prefecture

Description
For the purpose of the research of special education for the mentally retarded of primary school in Shimane Prefecture, we asked for 116 teachers of the special classes to answer the question as to their 322 students. And, 71 teachers answered our survey.
1. Intelligence quotient of 199 children who attended their special classes was as following immeasurable and under 25 ; 7.5%, 26-50 ; 12.6%, 51-75 ; 48.7%, 76-85, 12.1%, over 86 ; 5.5%, and no discriptive ; 13.6%.
2. To assess inteligence quotient, 41 teachers used WTSC or WISC-R, 13 teachers adopted Tanaka-Binet, and 7 teachers applied Suzuki-Binet.
3. Among 71 teachers who answered our question, only 7 teachers hada decade experiences of special education for the mentally retarded.
4. 62 teachers adopted any kind of play to make instruction, and all classes had some educational plaining of integration.
5. 86 mentally retarded studeuts were picked up, and asked as to their daily life. The results indicated us that toileting and speech were specially difficult for them.
6. 81 mentally retarded students was checked to show many problemed behavior. Results showed us that the teacher of special education should a㏄ept fear, anger, and sorrow of them, and had to try to make them sure and self-respective.
